Bird Tours Peru - Puerto Maldonado

Lower rainforest near Puerto Maldonado

We offer 2 short rainforest tours starting from Puerto Maldonado, one to Sandoval Lake Lodge and one to the Tambopata Reserve. These tours combine well with our short Manu tours where we don´t visit the lower rainforest.
The differences with our Manu Tours are:
- no transport by car, you fly in from Cusco or Lima
- no bird guide of Tanager Tours, but a guide from the lodge (only with groups of min. 4 people we provide one of our own guides.

Posada & Tambopata Research Center ( 6 days)

Day 1: Cusco-Puerto Maldonado-Posada Amazonas

The morning flight will bring you from Cusco (or Lima) to Pto.Maldonado. From here the boat brings you in 2 hours upstream the Tambopata river to Posada Amazonas Lodge. During the river trip we may see Large-billed -& Yellow-billed Terns, Black Skimmer, Pied Lapwing, Capped Heron, Amazon Kingfisher and there is a possibility to see Jabiru or one of the big eagles. In the afternoon you will visit the 35 meter high canopy tower.

Day 2: to Tambopata Research Center

After an early breakfast we go to the next lodge, but on the way you visit the Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake. During a long easy canoe ride you may expecte to see the threatened Giant Otter, Hoatzin, diff. kingfishers, a possible Agami Heron etc. You arrive at Tambopata Research Center (TRC),situated in the pristine heart of the reserve after a 3-4 hour boat ride. There will be time for a first walk on one of the trails.

Day 3,4: stay at TRC

The main attraction at TRC is the world largest clay lick, where hundreds of parrots and macaws congregate daily. National Geografic dedicated an article to this clay lick and to the Macaw Project of TRC. If it is raining the parrots do not come, but don´t worry, you have three changes to see this spectacular play (incl. the morning of day 5). You may expect 10-12 species from the following list: Red-and-Green -, Scarlet-, Blue-and-yellow -, Chestnut-fronted- and Red-bellied Macaws, Mealy - & Yellow-crowned Amazones, Blue-headed -, Orange-cheeked - and White-bellied Parrots, Dusky-headed -, White-eyed -, Cobalt-winged - & Tui Parakeets and Dusky-billed Parrotlets.

But besides that TRC has some excellent trials in the bamboo and in the primary forest. See the section News & Reports for more information. New species in Tambopata -compared with our Manu Tour - would be: the very local Rufous-fronted Antthush, Red-bellied Macaw, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Yellow-browed Tyrant, White-eyed Attila, Muskovy Duck, Green Ibis, while there is a bigger change for Razor-billed Curassow, Common Piping-Guan, Laughing Falcon and some antbirds associated with lakes/ponds.

Day 5: Return to Posada Amazonas

After a morning walk or a visit to the clay lick again, you embark arriving in Posada Amazonas at mid-afternoon. At this lodge they encounter rather regular one of the star-birds of the continent, the Harpy Eagle.

Day 6: Return to Pto.Maldonado and fly-out

Nearly no bird watching today: it is the system in all lodges that you leave the lodge early the last day. From Puerto Maldonado there are daily flights to Cusco and Lima.

Sandoval Lake Lodge (4 days)

A cheaper way to visit the lower rainforest in the area of the Tambopata Reserve is a visit to this lodge. The big attraction here is an oxbow-lake with a family of Giant Otters and bird specialities like Black-faced Cotinga, Agami Heron, Point-tailed Palmcreeper and a colony of Red-bellied Macaws.

Day 1- Cusco-Pto.Maldonado-Sandoval Lodge

An early morning flight from Cusco brings you within 30 minutes to Puerto Maldonado. From there it is a 40-minute boat trip on the river Madre de Dios to the entrance trail of the lodge. While they carry our luggage, we walk this 2,5 km trail to the lake, bird watching. Crossing the lake by canoe we arrive in time in the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we take our first canoe ride on this wonderful lake.

Day 2,3: Sandoval Lake Lodge

Early morning there is a lot of bird activity along the lake as well as in the forest. Sandoval is an excellent place to see different members of the Toucan family and to see raptors, like Laughing Falcon and Slate-coloured Hawk. The parrot family is also well represented. During the afternoon kingfishers, herons, the Long-billed Woodcreeper, the Point-tailed Palmcreeper, the Giant Cowbird and a big colony of Red-bellied Macaws among others are visible in the extensive Mauritia Palm swamp. Another highlight is the endangered Giant Otter, always present on the lake. At dawn you can see caymen.

On our walks we hope to find birds like Brazilian Tinamou, Black-faced Cotinga, Plumbeous Antbird, Ruddy Foliagegleaner and Pavonine Quetzal amongst others. Spectacled Owl and Tropical Screech-Owl are possiblities at night.

Day 4: Return to Cusco or Lima

Nearly no bird watching today: it is the system in all lodges that you leave the lodge early the last day. From Puerto Maldonado there are daily flights to Cusco and Lima.
