Sites Visited

Amazonian Expeditions (Tahuayo) Lodge

Usually known as Tahuayo Lodge (04 18S 73 14W) at 370m altitude on the Tahuayo River a tributary of the Amazon some 40km south-west of Iquitos . This lodge is located in the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo reserve and has an interesting mix of Varzea , Igapo and Terra Firme forest together with riverine/river edge habitats with several large and interesting river islands on the way along the Amazon , but NB not on the Tahuayo River itself . This lodge represents one of the few accessible localities south and east of the Amazon in Northern Peru and as such makes it of major interest for several species rare or data deficient within Peru .

This site was birded between 13 –18 April in good weather conditions , very hot and humid , and with little precipitation .

13 April Arrive pm ; short walk along Varzea trail from lodge clearing

14 April AM Varzea trail as yesterday , all morning ; pm boat trip to nearby igapo forest area called Tallmichal

15 April AM boat trip , some 45 minutes , to terra firme trail downriver from Coco village; pm boat trip along river edge near lodge

16 April AM boat trip , some 30 minutes downriver , to second terra firme trail ; pm short walk along varzea trail from lodge

17 April AM boat trip to terra firme trail some 15 minutes from lodge ( San Pedro to Chino trail ) ; PM short boat trip to second Igapo area near lodge called Cocha Tapaje.

18 April very early departure from lodge birding on 2 large river islands near the mouth of the Tahuayo river in the Amazon ; birded both Cecropia dominated woodland and earlier successional vegetation dominated by Gynerium , Tessaria and marsh vegetation .

Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve (AM)

This reserve is situated some 23 km south west of Iquitos (S 03 55 W 73 29 south bank of the Rio Nanay 150 m altitude )along the Iquitos-Nauta road and is well-known for its very interesting white sand forest areas , or Varillal , which harbours many highly localised species and which has yielded 4 species new to science . There is rather more terra firme forest within the reserve although the main focus on this trip was to bird the extensive , and somewhat labyrinthine , trail network within the varillal forest . Activity was very low during the days visited ( 19-21 April ) and considerable use of playback was necessary to locate some of the target species .

Sites in Central Peruvian Andes

From 22- 26 April several sites in the Central Peruvian Andes were visited ; these being ;

The Santa Eulalia valley ( 11 35S 76 22W Altitude 2400-4200m) is well known , above the town of San Pedro de Casta and harbours many high Andean species including several Peruvian endemics .

Parihuanca is the type locality for Atlapetes melanops which was sought here but not located .

Comas ; a small town on the Satipo road just beyond which remains some roadside temperate forest at (S 11 40 31 W 075 03 37 Altitude 3600 m) which harbours the little known endemic Schizoeaca palpebralis and the undescribed ‘Millpo Tapaculo'as well as several other high Andean Peruvian endemics .

Punto ; a tiny settlement (Altitude 3880 m ) some 2 hours by road south and east of Comas across puno habitat from which trails descend into elfin forest fragments and then temperate forest . Another site where Atlapetes melanops has been found as well as the range restricted Metallura eupogon .

Marcapomacocha ; a well known high Andean site ( 11 26S 76 21W Altitude 4415m) from which several high Andean Peruvian endemics are known , perhaps most notably the very rare Cinclodes palliatus .
